    French Toast For 2

I got the hype behind French Toast once I finally made my own and perfected the recipe to get that crisp edge and soft center that isn’t soggy hehe!

This is a small batch recipe which I love because we don’t have leftovers and it’s the perfect amount for a filling breakfast!

These French Toasts for 2 are:

    • Crisp on the outside with soft centers!
    • Not soggy like most.
    • The perfect amount for 2: no leftovers!
    • Buttery and sweet.
    • Ready in 10 minutes!
    • Easy and beginner-friendly.
    • Highly customizable: choose your toppings!

    Ingredients for French Toast

Bread. The best bread for French Toast is stale bread so this is the perfect recipe to use up any leftover bread you have! Classic American sandwich bread (the thicker the better), Challah, you can even make French Toast with leftover donuts hehe!

Egg. The base of your French Toast mixture is basically a custard so you’ll need eggs.

Milk, for the custard mixture. I recommend whole milk. For a restaurant-worthy French Toast, try cream instead of regular milk! Cream makes anything better (peep my Heavy Cream Pancakes, a reader favorite)! You can try half and half.

Flour, adding a tiny bit of flour makes the custard thicker and gives you that perfect crisp edge and soft center combo without the sogginess! It also makes the custard stick to the bread and not the pan hehe!

Sugar, I like brown sugar but white granulated works.

    Vanilla, for flavor.

    Cinnamon, for flavor.

Butter, for frying and topping (if desired).

    How to make French Toast

STEP ONE: Make the custard mixture. In a a shallow bowl or small baking dish, add the flour, sugar, and cinnamon, make a well and pour in the milk, eggs and vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Quicker? Add everything to a blender.

STEP TWO: Preheat a large skillet over medium heat and grease with butter. Once the butter is sizzling, you can start frying. You can also use a griddle!

STEP THREE: Fry. Dip the first slice of bread in the custard mixture. Don’t let it absorb too much mixture, a quick dip on both sides is enough (if you let it absorb too much mixture, it might get soggy). Place in the skillet, set the heat to low, and repeat with as many slices you can fit in your pan.

Cook for 2-3 minutes or until crisp and lightly browned, flip and cook until crisp again (1-2 more minutes). Plate and repeat with the next batch. Do not pre-dip the bread or it’ll get soggy! Top with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and butter!

French Toast Tips from my Kitchen

    • Cast-iron works best for French Toast because it holds heat better so you get a perfect crisp edge, without the bread burning, and a soft center that still cooks through.
    • You want to place the custardy bread on a hot skillet with butter but then reduce the heat to low so the center cooks!
