    Colombian Hot Dogs

No because have you ever had Colombian Hot Dogs? Like, from a street vendor, freshly made, with all the 2000 toppings they come with? For 6000 pesos ($1.25).

If the answer is no, let me put you on.

Colombian Hot Dogs are LOADED but depending on where you get them, the toppings can vary slightly. These have pineapple sauce (pretty common in street food), coleslaw, minced onion, papas fosforinas (shoestring fries), ketchup, pink sauce, mustard, mayo, and, of course, the actual hot dog sausage and bun.

I have a recipe for the Colombian Pineapple Sauce here. I highly recommend you try it: it’s fruity, sweet, with a very slight tang. If you have leftovers, you can use it on pork, shrimp, chicken, tacos, or even desserts (I made some danishes a while ago) so you’ll find ways to use it up!

Seriously though, if you love hot dogs, you need to try them Colombian-style!

    Ingredients

    • Pineapple sauce. Here’s the recipe: Colombian Pineapple Sauce. I highly recommend you try it because it’s 100% homemade and it tastes SO good! It’s pretty sweet so if you have leftovers you can use it as a topping for both desserts or meats/fish or salads. Can’t go wrong with it, really.
    • Coleslaw. I will provide a coleslaw recipe in the notes of the recipe card down below but feel free to use your favorite coleslaw recipe if you have one.
    • Hot dog sausage. It’s usually boiled in water rather than grilled.
    • Hot dog buns. Homemade or store-bought.
    • Onion. I recommend white onion and you want to mince it very finely.
    • Papas fosforinas also known as shoestring fries or thin cut fries. I had no idea how these were called in the USA so I had to google it lol. You can buy these or make them at home but I recommend just buying them because it’s much quicker and easier and that’s what street vendors use.
    • Ketchup.
    • Pink sauce (also known as “salsa rosada”). Most say salsa rosada is a simple mixture of mayo and ketchup (which is what I did for these dogs because that’s what I grew up thinking as well lol) but others have actual recipes for salsa rosada because they make their own version and add more ingredients to it.
    • Mustard.
    • Mayonnaise.

How to make Colombian Hot Dogs

    1. Prepare the pineapple sauce following my Colombian Pineapple Sauce recipe.
    2. Make the coleslaw following the recipe in the notes of the recipe card down below or feel free to use your favorite coleslaw recipe or even store-bought coleslaw if you’re in a rush.
    3. Make the pink sauce. This takes a minute. Simply combine the mayonnaise and ketchup until smooth.
    4. Cook the dogs. Street hot dogs are usually boiled in water but some do grill their dogs so grill them if you prefer.
    5. Slice the buns. You can toast the inside of your buns with butter but I think I never saw a hot dog callejero (from the street) with a toasted bun so you can skip it.
    6. Assemble. Add the minced onions to each bun, followed by a layer of coleslaw, then add the dogs, and top with papas fosforinas (fries), pineapple sauce, ketchup, pink sauce, mustard, and mayo. Serve!

Can I make these ahead of time?

You can make the pineapple sauce, coleslaw, and pink sauce ahead of time (up to 1 day ahead of time). Assemble when ready to serve.

How to store leftover hot dogs?

These dogs don’t keep very well because of the toppings so I recommend planning ahead and making the right amount of hot dogs to begin with.

If you do have leftovers, you can store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to a day, keeping in mind that the fries will soften up, the bread may dry up, and the sauces will mix together.

    Notes

*Quick Coleslaw Recipe: add 2 cups (180 g) shredded cabbage and 1 grated carrot to a medium bowl. Add 1/4 cup (60 g) mayonnaise, 1/2 tbsp vinegar, 1/2 tsp sugar, salt, and pepper to taste and mix until combined and creamy.
Make Ahead Instructions: make the pineapple sauce, coleslaw, and pink sauce ahead of time (up to 1 day ahead of time). Assemble when ready to serve.
Storing Instructions: hot dogs don't keep very well, especially Colombian-style hot dogs because of all the toppings so I recommend planning ahead and making the right amount of hot dogs to begin with and if you do have leftovers, you can store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to a day, keeping in mind that the fries will soften up, the bread may dry up, and the sauces will mix together.
