Baked Brie with Caramelized Onions: hot, creamy, flavorful, and extra-cheesy. Serve this cozy appetizer with bread or crackers of choice and dig in! This is sure to be a favorite!
Baked Brie with caramelized onions
Today I bring you a major Holiday appetizer (esp for cheese lovers like me!!): Baked Brie with Caramelized Onions!
It’s ready in just 20 minutes, packed with flavor thanks to the caramelized onions and tastes so expensive (pair it with a good wine and you’ll prob win the Holiday season).
You can dress it up or down selecting the right type of vessel for you: crackers for something casual or French baguette (or any other fancy bread you like) for a classier vibe.
Why you’ll love this appetizer:
- Flavorful. The caramelized onions will bring all the guests to the yards… or the kitchen. Sautéed in butter with a hint of wine and brown sugar, these onions could stand alone but paired with melty Brie?! The perfect combo.
- Ready in 20 minutes. This is the perfect appetizer for busy days and intricate menus: no hassle but so delicious!
- Customizable. Casual catch up with a friend? Stock up on your favorite crackers. Want to impress your guests? Slice a French baguette or bread of choice and bring on the fancy wine!
Ingredients
Butter. Use unsalted butter for this recipe. You can sub in olive oil if you prefer but I highly recommend sticking to butter for best flavor.
Onions. Both red and white onions will work for this recipe.
Salt and pepper for seasoning.
Wine. I recommend using a dry white wine which will cook down and evaporate so, yes, this appetizer is safe for kids. If you can’t or don’t want to consume alcohol though, you can use water instead. Broth also works but I usually sub in just water, especially in this recipe.
Brown sugar for caramelizing. You can also use white sugar but I recommend brown sugar because it’s more interesting flavor-wise.
Brie cheese. Obviously. The star of the show.
Vessels of choice. Crackers for a casual vibe or sliced bread such as Baguette for a classier vibe!
How to make Brie with caramelized onions
STEP ONE: Caramelize the onions. Preheat the oven to 350F (180C). Add the butter to a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the butter has melted completely, add onions, and saute until translucent (about 4-5 minutes). Season with salt and pepper. Add half of the wine and stir until it evaporates completely then add the brown sugar and saute until darker in color. Add then remaining wine and stir until wine evaporates again. Turn off the heat.
STEP TWO: Bake the Brie. Unwrap the Brie and slice off the top rind of the cheese (optional). Place Brie (rind side down) onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Top with caramelized onions and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese melts. Serve immediately.
Make-Ahead and Storing Instructions
This kind of appetizer isn’t really for making-ahead or storing. It’s supposed to be enjoyed hot, as soon as it comes out of the oven as the Brie will harden as it cools.
It can be stored, if necessary, though. Simply store any leftovers covered or in an air-tight container and reheat in the oven or microwave until the cheese is melty again.
HAPPY COOKING!! I hope you’ll love this Baked Brie with Caramelized Onions as much as I do!
