    Oat Milk Hot Chocolate

Today I’m bringing you this BANGER oat milk hot chocolate. It’s seriously the best. It’s sweet, chocolatey, and will probably get you addicted. I’m having it nearly every day since trying it.

I can technically drink regular milk but I don’t like drinking cow milk, I never liked it, so I’m always on the hunt for plant-based modified drinks that are actually worth it and this hot chocolate is one of them.

If you’ve ever wondered “can you put oat milk in hot chocolate” and “does oat milk heat well for hot chocolate” the answer to both questions is HELL YES. It’s literally perfect: heats well, has a mild flavor, and you won’t notice you’re having a plant-based hot chocolate.

Try it and let me know what you think!!

Oat Milk Hot Chocolate Ingredients (and tips)

Check the recipe card down below for the full list of ingredients + instructions!

    • Oat milk. Obviously lol.
    • Cocoa powder. I like unsweetened but you can technically use any, just make sure you adjust the amount of sugar if using sweetened. Also, make sure you’re using good quality cocoa powder because it will make a difference in flavor.
    • Brown sugar. You can also use white sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, honey, whatever you like. Just keep in mind that each sweetener has a different flavor. I just love the depth and coziness of brown sugar and brown sugar is SO good down here at the equator.
    • Chocolate. You can use a chocolate bar or chocolate chips. For best flavor I recommend using a good quality chocolate bar (I use a local chocolate bar that’s spiked with liquor and it makes my hot cocoa even better but pick one you love, that’s the secret). Also, sometimes chocolate chips are coated with starch or chemicals to keep them from clumping up and that will keep them from melting into your hot cocoa (been there, done that, no more choc chips for me).
    • Toppings: I have a whole section down below for topping and add-ins ideas so keep reading if you need some inspo!

How To Make Oat Milk Hot Chocolate

Check the recipe card down below for the full list of ingredients + instructions!

    1. Combine the oat milk, cocoa powder, and sugar into a small saucepan. You can also add some cinnamon if you’d like.
    2. Simmer. Allow the hot chocolate to come to a simmer and let simmer while stirring from time to time. This will allow the sugar to dissolve completely and the flavors to blend together.
    3. Add the chocolate bar or chips (I don’t recommend choc chips because they may be coated in starch or chemicals that may keep them from melting completely, been there done that). Keep mixing and simmering until the chocolate has dissolved.
    4. Top with your favorite toppings. I recommend whipped coconut cream (I will provide the instructions for making whipped coconut cream in the recipe card down below), cinnamon, extra cocoa powder, chocolate or chocolate chips, or chili flakes.

    Toppings And Add-Ins

    • Coconut whipped cream. I will provide the recipe and instructions for this in the notes of the recipe card down below.
    • Cinnamon. You can add a whole cinnamon stick to the serving glass, or add a whole stick to the milk when it’s simmering (take it out when you add in the chocolate), or just sprinkle in some ground cinnamon in the oat milk or on top.
    • Vanilla extract. Add this before serving and give it a good mix.
    • Peppermint extract. Add this before serving and give it a good mix.
    • Orange extract. Add this before serving and give it a good mix.
    • Dulce de leche or caramel. Add this into your hot chocolate when adding the chocolate bar or use it as topping.
    • Extra cocoa powder, chocolate, or chocolate chips on top of the coconut whipped cream!
    • Cocoa nibs as topping.
    • Marshmallows.
    • Chili flakes. You can add them to the milk when it’s simmering for extra heat or just use as topping for (mostly) decoration purposes and a lil heat. I love adding some spiciness to my hot chocolate!

    Your Most Asked Questions

Is oat milk hot chocolate healthy?

This depend on your definition of healthy. This recipe does contain sugar so if that’s not a healthy ingredient for you and your needs, then no. For a healthy person with no restrictions, this is a healthy hot chocolate to enjoy with no guilt.

Can you use oat milk in hot drinks?

Yes, you can. Just like regular milk, you want to avoid boiling it to keep it from burning but as long as you keep an eye on the temperature, let it simmer, and whisk here and there, you’ll be fine.

What non dairy milk is best for hot chocolate?

Oat milk!! Which is why I want you to try this recipe. It has the best texture and flavor and you won’t notice you’re having a plant-based hot chocolate.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups (500 ml) oat milk
    • 4 tsp (10 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 5 tsp (30 g) brown sugar (or sweetener of choice, sweetness may be adjusted)
    • 4 tsp (20 g) chocolate bar (chopped, I don't recommend chocolate chips as they may not mix in well)
    • Toppings of choice (see notes down below)

    Instructions

    • Add the oat milk, cocoa powder, and sugar to a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Mix until combined. You can add in any spices at this time.
    • Simmer. Allow the hot chocolate mixture to simmer, stirring frequently to keep it from burning and sticking to the saucepan.
    • Add in the chocolate. Once the hot chocolate is hot and simmering, add in the chocolate, stir until fully dissolved, then turn off the heat. You can add in any add-ins that do not need to be simmer at this time (such as vanilla extract or any extract of your choice).
    • Add toppings. Serve and top with your favorite toppings. See notes for ideas.

    Notes

Topping And Add-Ins: coconut whipped cream, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, orange extract, dulce de leche or caramel, extra cocoa powder or chocolate, cocoa nibs, marshmallows, chili flakes.
How To Make Coconut Whipped Cream: for 2 servings, refrigerate a can of coconut milk for 1-2 days, when you're ready to serve your hot chocolate, take the coconut milk out of the refrigerator, add 1/2 cup (120 ml) of coconut milk to a medium bowl, making sure you're using the thickest, hardened part of the can, leaving out the watery part (you can use that in a drink or smoothie). Use a mixer to beat the coconut cream until fluffy (about a minute). Add in 2 tbsp of powdered sugar or favorite sweetener and mix. Scoop on top of your hot cocoa and serve immediately.
