    Dalgona Coffee Without Coffee Recipe

    Coffee-Free Dalgona

I’m usually not a fan for “main-ingredient”-free recipes. I think they’re dumb (sorry). But that’s always until a viral drink with coffee comes out. Then I gotta join that club.

I’m not a coffee drinker (I know). I don’t get the hype: it makes me tired, gives me headaches, and the taste just isn’t for me.

Dalgona though? I had to find a way to make it drinkable for myself and all of you sparse souls out there that don’t drink coffee for whatever reason… and I found how to!

    Why you’ll love this recipe:

    • Coffee and caffeine-free. If you’re trying to cut down on coffee or simply don’t like it, this is the one recipe you need!
    • Kid-friendly. If you want your child to enjoy Dalgona with you, this is going to be our little secret! (;
    • Fluffy and creamy which is what makes a Dalgona worth it, right?
    • Hot or cold: you can enjoy this drink both ways!
    • Variations. Try this with matcha powder instead!

    Caffeine Free Dalgona Coffee

    Ingredients for Dalgona

Instant barley. The secret ingredient! This is what makes coffee-free dalgona possible. Barley is an alternative to coffee with a similar flavor (not as bitter and intense) but it’s caffeine-free and can be enjoyed by children as well. You shouldn’t drink barley if you are gluten-free or have allergies to cereal grains though.

Powdered sugar, needed for whipping the barley.

    Hot water, for the barley.

Milk. You can use any milk: cow or plant-based. I like almond or coconut milk (not canned) for my Dalgona.

    Ice cubes, for iced Dalgona.

How to make Dalgona Coffee at home

STEP ONE: Whip the barley. In a bowl, add the barley, hot water, and powdered sugar. Using a hand-held mixer, beat the mixture until light and fluffy. This recipe makes 2 dalgona drinks but if you want to make more (or less), just know that the formula is always equal parts barley, water, and sugar.

STEP TWO: Assemble the drink. Pour the milk into each glass (add ice, if desired) then top each drink with dollops of whipped barley. Enjoy!
