What are the ingredients of guacamole?

Avocados. Duh but wait, you want to get the best type of avocados for guacamole which are Hass avocados because they’re creamy and rich. You can easily recognize Hass avocados because they’re smaller with a wrinkly dark green peel that turns darker or dark purple/black when they’re ripe. If you need help with picking avocados and avoiding the overripe ones, check the mini guide down below!

Lime juice. We love freshly squeezed lime juice for our guac but of course regular lemons will work too. This ingredient is there to provide some zest and tang *AND* to keep your guacamole from turning brown.

Onion. Red onion all the way when it comes to guacamole! It provides the best flavor and those purple speckles look so fun!

    Salt, for flavor.

How do you pick an avocado for guacamole?

When picking an avocado, ask yourself when you plan on eating it. This way you’ll avoid ending up with hard or rotten avocados when it’s time to use them!

How to pick an avocado ready to eat in 1-2 days: select a dark green (almost dark purple) avocado. Apply very gentle pressure to the avocado, it should be somewhat firm but not hard. Keep it uncovered at room temperature and it’ll be ready in 1-2 days.

How to pick an avocado ready to eat in 3-4 days: select a green avocado. Apply very gentle pressure to the avocado, it should be hard. Keep it uncovered at room temperature and it’ll be ready in 3-4 days.

    How to store guacamole

Guacamole is best eaten fresh but if you do have leftovers, cover them with plastic, with the plastic wrap directly pressed on top of the guacamole and up over the sides of the bowl to keep air from coming into contact with the avocados.

Store it in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days.

I personally recommend sticking to just overnight as avocados tend to turn brown over time, no matter how well you store them and how much lime/lemon you add. While brown guacamole is still safe to eat, it can look unappetizing and take on a slightly bitter note.
